Bele Palya (Toor dal dry Curry)

Ingredients

For Masala

  • 1 onion sliced

  • 5-6 dry red chilies (add more if you want more spicy)

  • 2 cloves

  • 2 inches ginger

  • 1/2 cup grated coconut

  • 1 tablespoon oil

For Curry

  • 1 cup toor dal

  • 1 tablespoon oil

  • A pinch of hing

  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin and mustard

  • 7-8 curry leaves

  • 1 onion chopped

  • 1 tomato chopped

  • 1/2 teaspoon turmeric

  • 1/2 teaspoon garam masala

  • Salt for taste

  • Fresh coriander

 

Instructions

  1. Pressure cook toor dal for 2 whistles. It should be cooked but not mushy.

  2. Cut onion, ginger. Keep dry red chilies, cloves and grated coconut for the masala.

  3. Heat 1tbsp oil in a pan, add sliced onion, ginger and fry until onion is translucent. Add dry red chilies and grated coconut and turn off the flame after a minute. Blend the mixture to a smooth paste once it's cooled.

  4. Heat another tbsp oil and add a pinch of hing, cumin and mustard. Add chopped onion and curry leaves and fry until onions are brown.

  5. Add chopped tomato and salt and saute.

  6. Add turmeric, garam masala and 2tbsp water. Let the tomato turn mushy.

  7. Add the blended paste and let it cook for a minute, add the cooked toor dal and add water if necessary.

  8. Let it simmer for 5 mins. Add fresh coriander.

  9. Serve with roti, chapati or jowar roti.
